Smartlead is cheaper than lemlist below about 6,000 emails a month ($39 against $69) and again above 50,000 ($94 for 90,000 emails against $138 for two lemlist accounts). Between those two points lemlist's $69 Email plan wins, because Smartlead's next plan is $94. lemlist is also the one with unlimited contacts and a lead database built in.
Both tools bill per account on their email plans, not per seat, which surprises people who have read that lemlist charges per user. That is true only of lemlist's Multichannel plan. So the comparison comes down to three numbers: how many emails you send a month, how many contacts sit in active campaigns, and whether you need the vendor to find the email addresses for you.
We read Smartlead's prices from smartlead.ai/pricing and lemlist's from lemlist.com/pricing in September 2026. Every total, crossover point and per-email cost below is our arithmetic, not a number either vendor publishes.
lemlist vs Smartlead pricing, plan against plan
| Plan | Monthly / annual per month | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Smartlead Base | $39 / $32.50 | 6,000 emails, 2,000 active contacts, unlimited mailboxes and warm-up |
| Smartlead Pro | $94 / $78.30 | 90,000 emails, 30,000 active contacts |
| Smartlead Unlimited Smart | $174 / $144.50 | 150,000 emails, unlimited contacts, 50,000 verified prospect emails |
| Smartlead Unlimited Prime | $379 / $314.60 | 500,000 emails, unlimited contacts, 170,000 verified prospect emails |
| lemlist Email | $69 / $55 | 50,000 emails, unlimited users, senders and contacts, 650M+ lead database |
| lemlist Multichannel | $109 / $87 per user | Unlimited emails, 5 senders per user, LinkedIn, SMS, WhatsApp and calls |
Smartlead's yearly discount is close to 17% on every plan. lemlist's is 20% for a year, and it also sells quarterly billing at 10% off. Smartlead is running 50% off the first month on any plan, which matters for a trial month but not for the yearly bill.
Is Smartlead cheaper than lemlist?
Smartlead is cheaper at low and high volume, and lemlist is cheaper in the middle. The switch points are 6,000 and 50,000 emails a month on monthly billing, and the same on annual billing because both vendors discount by a similar margin.
| Emails a month | Smartlead, monthly / annual | lemlist, monthly / annual |
|---|---|---|
| 6,000 | $39 / $32.50 (Base) | $69 / $55 (Email) |
| 20,000 | $94 / $78.30 (Pro) | $69 / $55 (Email) |
| 50,000 | $94 / $78.30 (Pro) | $69 / $55 (Email) |
| 90,000 | $94 / $78.30 (Pro) | $138 / $110 (two Email accounts) |
| 150,000 | $174 / $144.50 (Unlimited Smart) | $207 / $165 (three Email accounts) |
At 50,000 emails lemlist costs $1.38 per 1,000 against Smartlead's $1.88, and Smartlead Pro still has 40,000 sends of headroom you are paying for. At 90,000 the order flips: Smartlead Pro costs $1.04 per 1,000 and lemlist's Email plan has run out.
The contact cap moves small teams onto Smartlead Pro
Smartlead Base allows 6,000 emails but only 2,000 active contacts. A founder emailing 5,000 people once each fits the email allowance and breaks the contact one, so the real price is Pro at $94. lemlist's Email plan has no contact cap, which makes it $25 a month cheaper for that list.
The same thing happens at the next step up. Pro holds 30,000 active contacts. A team running a single touch to 40,000 accounts a month needs Unlimited Smart at $174 on Smartlead, while lemlist stays at $69 as long as total emails stay under 50,000. If you run short sequences to wide lists, check the contact cap before the email count. Our Smartlead pricing breakdown has the full allowance table for each plan.
Does lemlist charge per user?
Only on Multichannel. The lemlist Email plan is $69 a month for unlimited users and unlimited senders, so a ten person team pays the same $69 as a founder. Multichannel is $109 per user a month, or $87 on annual billing, and adds LinkedIn, SMS, WhatsApp and calling.
Several of the pages that rank for this comparison say a five person team pays $345 a month on lemlist. That figure multiplies the Email price by five, which is not how the Email plan bills. A five person team pays $69 on Email, or $545 a month if all five need Multichannel.
Smartlead does not bill per seat on any plan. For a team, then, the question is the same on both tools: which plan covers the combined volume. If you are staffing up to run the outbound, many teams hire a remote sales development rep first and let that person pick the tool, since the plan choice follows their daily volume. The full lemlist plan table, including Enterprise, is on our lemlist pricing page.
Above 50,000 emails, lemlist gets expensive
lemlist's Email plan stops at 50,000 emails a month. Past that point there are two routes. One is a second Email account at another $69, which means separate lists and reporting. The other is Multichannel, which has unlimited emails but only 5 senders per user.
The sender limit is what sets the Multichannel bill. At about 660 emails per sending mailbox a month (30 a working day), 90,000 emails need roughly 137 senders, which is 28 Multichannel users, or $3,052 a month billed monthly. Nobody would buy that for volume alone, so in practice teams above 50,000 either split into several Email accounts or move to a volume sender. Smartlead covers 90,000 on Pro at $94 and 150,000 on Unlimited Smart at $174.
Lead data changes the answer
If you need the tool to find email addresses, the comparison moves toward Smartlead. Smartlead lists 2,000 verified prospect emails on Base and 30,000 on Pro, sold as a $59 a month add-on on those two plans and included on Unlimited Smart and Prime. lemlist's lead database comes with the Email plan, but finding an email costs credits: its Lead Data add-on is $20 a month for 2,000 credits, which lemlist says is about 400 emails.
| Found emails a month | Smartlead, monthly | lemlist, monthly |
|---|---|---|
| 2,000 | $98 (Base plus $59 add-on) | $169 ($69 plus $100 in credits) |
| 30,000 | $153 (Pro plus $59 add-on) | $1,569 ($69 plus $1,500 in credits) |
| 50,000 | $174 (Unlimited Smart, included) | Not practical on credits |
The lemlist column assumes 5 credits per found email at $0.01 a credit, from the add-on's own figure. If you bring your own list from another source, ignore this table and use the volume one above. Our lemlist vs Instantly pricing comparison runs the same credit math against a third tool.
Mailboxes are the bill neither pricing page shows
Neither plan includes the mailboxes you send from. Both connect to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or SMTP inboxes that you buy separately. At 50,000 emails a month that is roughly 76 mailboxes on 26 domains. At $4.50 per mailbox, the fresh-mailbox price on Smartlead's partner page, plus $13 a domain a year, that is about $370 a month, four to five times the price of either plan.
So at real volume the tool subscription is the smaller line. The mailbox count is set by how many emails each inbox can send safely, and that is the same on both tools. Our guide to how many domains and mailboxes cold email needs walks through the sizing.
Which one should you buy?
| Your situation | Cheaper choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6,000 emails, under 2,000 contacts | Smartlead Base | $39 against $69 |
| 6,000 to 50,000 emails | lemlist Email | $69 flat against $94 |
| Wide lists with one touch each | lemlist Email | No contact cap |
| More than 50,000 emails | Smartlead Pro or Smart | lemlist Email stops at 50,000 |
| You need 2,000+ found emails a month | Smartlead | Verified emails far cheaper than credits |
| Every rep needs LinkedIn steps | lemlist Multichannel | $109 per user with LinkedIn built in |
If neither fits because both send templates at volume, and what you need is a first email written separately for each prospect, that is a different product. ColdMailer reads each prospect on your list, writes one message for that person, and sends it from your own SMTP after you approve it. It costs more per email than either tool here: Pro is $99 a month for 5,000 written emails, $19.80 per 1,000, against lemlist's $1.38. Teams use it for the accounts where a template would waste the contact. For the wider market, see our cold email software pricing comparison or the Smartlead alternative and lemlist alternative pages.
