Hunter is cheaper per email found once a team has three or more people or needs more than 4,000 emails a month: Growth is $104 a month billed annually for 10,000 credits shared by every user, which is $10.40 per 1,000. Apollo charges per seat, so its cost stays near $19.60 to $19.83 per 1,000 on every paid plan. Apollo wins for one or two people who need 2,001 to 4,000 emails a month, and for anyone who needs phone numbers.
Every price and credit figure below was read from hunter.io/pricing and apollo.io/pricing in September 2026. All totals, per-email costs and crossover points are our arithmetic. Apollo shows annual prices by default and says annual billing saves 24%, so we compare both tools on annual billing unless a row says otherwise. For the full plan detail of each tool, see our Hunter.io pricing breakdown and our page on Apollo.io pricing.
Hunter vs Apollo pricing, plan by plan
The single most important difference is the unit you pay for. Hunter bills per account, and every plan includes unlimited users. Apollo bills per seat, and each seat gets its own credit allowance. Everything else in this comparison follows from that.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual, per month | Email credits a month | Billed per |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hunter Free | $0 | $0 | 50 | Account |
| Hunter Starter | $49 | $34 | 2,000 | Account |
| Hunter Growth | $149 | $104 | 10,000 | Account |
| Hunter Scale | $299 | $209 | 25,000 | Account |
| Apollo Free | $0 | $0 | 75 (900 a year) | Seat |
| Apollo Basic | Not shown | $49 | About 2,500 (30,000 a year upfront) | Seat |
| Apollo Professional | Not shown | $79 | 4,000 (48,000 a year) | Seat |
| Apollo Organization | Not shown | $119, 3 seat minimum | 6,000 (72,000 a year) | Seat |
Hunter annual billing takes 30% off, so Starter is $408 a year, Growth $1,248 and Scale $2,508. Hunter also has a custom Enterprise tier. On Hunter, 1 credit finds 1 email through Domain Search, Email Finder or Bulk Finder, and a Bulk Domain Search credit returns up to 10 emails. On Apollo, revealing a contact's email costs 1 credit, a phone number costs 8, enrichment can take up to 9 credits per record, and an AI research run costs 1.
Is Hunter cheaper than Apollo?
For most teams, yes. Hunter drops to $10.40 per 1,000 emails on Growth and $8.36 on Scale with annual billing, and one account covers everyone. Apollo sits near $19.60 to $19.83 per 1,000 on every paid plan because credits scale with seats. The exception is a solo user who needs between 2,001 and 4,000 emails a month.
Cost per 1,000 emails found
| Plan | Credits a month | Per 1,000, monthly billing | Per 1,000, annual billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunter Starter | 2,000 | $24.50 | $17.00 |
| Hunter Growth | 10,000 | $14.90 | $10.40 |
| Hunter Scale | 25,000 | $11.96 | $8.36 |
| Apollo Basic, per seat | About 2,500 | Not shown | $19.60 |
| Apollo Professional, per seat | 4,000 | Not shown | $19.75 |
| Apollo Organization, per seat | 6,000 | Not shown | $19.83 |
These figures assume you use every credit. Unused Hunter credits are a real cost if your volume swings, which is where Apollo's upfront grant helps (more on that below). Notice that Apollo's per-email cost barely moves as you climb its plans. You are not buying cheaper data on Professional or Organization. You are buying sending features and more mailboxes.
Where the answer flips for one person
A solo founder on annual billing sees three bands. Up to 2,000 emails a month, Hunter Starter at $34 beats Apollo Basic at $49. From 2,001 to about 2,500, Apollo Basic at $49 wins, because the next Hunter plan is Growth at $104. From 2,501 to 4,000, Apollo Professional at $79 still beats Hunter Growth. Above 4,000, one Apollo seat runs out, Organization needs three seats, and Hunter Growth at $104 for 10,000 is the cheaper route.
How much does Hunter vs Apollo cost for a team?
Hunter gets cheaper with every person you add, because the price does not change. Apollo gets more expensive, because each person is a seat. With two people on Apollo Basic you pay $98 for 5,000 credits, a little under Hunter Growth at $104. The third seat flips it: $147 on Apollo against $104 on Hunter.
| Scenario | Hunter, annual | Apollo, annual | Cheapest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 user, 2,000 emails a month | Starter, $34 | Basic, $49 | Hunter, $34 |
| 1 user, 2,500 emails a month | Growth, $104 (Starter stops at 2,000) | Basic, $49 | Apollo, $49 |
| 3 users, 7,500 emails a month | Growth, $104 for 10,000 shared | 3 Basic seats, $147 for 7,500 | Hunter, $104 |
| 5 users, 10,000 emails a month | Growth, $104 for 10,000 shared | 5 Basic seats, $245 for 12,500 | Hunter, $104 |
| 1 user, 25,000 emails a month | Scale, $209 | No single seat reaches it; 10 Basic seats would be $490 | Hunter, $209 |
The last row is not a realistic Apollo purchase. Nobody buys ten seats for one person. It is there to show that Apollo's listed plans are not built for one heavy prospector. If that is you, Hunter Scale at $8.36 per 1,000 is the cheapest line in this whole comparison.
Credits granted upfront vs monthly
Apollo grants paid-plan credits per seat per year, upfront. A Basic seat gets 30,000 on day one. That suits seasonal prospecting: you can pull 10,000 contacts in a January push and then go quiet for two months without wasting anything. Hunter hands out credits monthly, so a slow month is a month of credits you paid for and did not use. If your list building comes in bursts, that difference can matter more than the per-1,000 figures above.
Verification and phone numbers
Hunter charges 0.5 credit to verify an address. If you already have a list from somewhere else, such as an event export or a CRM, verifying 4,000 addresses takes 2,000 credits, which is the whole Starter allowance. Some teams build their own company list first, pulling firm names and domains from public directories with a web scraping API, then run Hunter domain searches against those domains. That approach makes Bulk Domain Search, at up to 10 emails per credit, the best value on the page.
Phones are simpler. Hunter is email only. Apollo reveals a phone number for 8 credits. If your process includes calling, Apollo is the one that can do it, and a Basic seat covers roughly 312 phone reveals a month if you spend nothing else (our arithmetic). For an email-only motion, that feature is money you do not need to spend. We compare Hunter with another email-first tool in Hunter.io vs Snov.io pricing.
Which has more accurate emails, Hunter or Apollo?
We did not test accuracy, and we would not trust a single number for either tool. Accuracy depends on your market: company size, country, industry and how often people change jobs there. The reliable method is to pull the same 100 prospects from both tools, verify them, and compare the bounce rate on your own list.
Run that test on the free tiers if you can. Hunter Free gives 50 credits a month and Apollo Free gives 75 per seat, so a 100-contact sample may take two months, or one month of a paid plan. That is still cheaper than committing a year of annual billing to the wrong database. Watch for catch-all domains in the results, since neither tool can fully confirm an address on a server that accepts everything.
Can you send cold emails from Hunter or Apollo?
Yes, both can send, with limits. Hunter Starter sends sequences through 3 connected email accounts with up to 2,500 recipients per sequence. Apollo Basic allows 1 mailbox per user and 250 sends a day, roughly 5,500 a month over 22 workdays by our arithmetic. Both are fine for small campaigns.
| Plan | Connected mailboxes | Sending limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hunter Free | 1 account | 500 recipients per sequence |
| Hunter Starter | 3 accounts | 2,500 recipients per sequence |
| Hunter Growth | 10 accounts | 5,000 recipients per sequence |
| Hunter Scale | 20 accounts, plus an account manager | 15,000 recipients per sequence |
| Apollo Free | 1 mailbox per user | 250 a day, 2 sequences per team |
| Apollo Basic | 1 mailbox per user | 250 a day, unlimited sequences |
| Apollo Professional | Unlimited Google and Microsoft, plus 5 SMTP per user | Unlimited daily sends, A/Z testing |
| Apollo Organization | Adds 15 SMTP mailboxes per user | Unlimited daily sends |
Apollo's sending gets serious on Professional, where the mailbox cap lifts and daily limits go away. Its Inbound and Advanced Dialer add-ons are $119 per team per month each, billed annually, if you need them. Hunter's sending scales by plan, so more recipients per sequence means a bigger data bill too. We look at Apollo's sending side in more detail in is Apollo good for cold email.
Where both run short is per-recipient writing. Templates with merge fields work, but a message written for each prospect from what you know about them is a different job. Once you want volume from several of your own inboxes, or a genuinely individual email per person, a dedicated sender is usually the next step. Our write-up on whether you need a separate tool to send cold email with Apollo walks through when that point arrives.
Do you need Hunter and Apollo together?
Usually not. Pick one based on team size and whether you need phone numbers. Three or more people on email only points to Hunter. One or two people who want phones, or bursty prospecting with upfront credits, points to Apollo. Paying for both mostly buys duplicate contacts.
The case for both is narrow: a team that finds Apollo thin in one niche can keep Hunter Starter at $34 as a backfill for domain searches. Before stacking tools, check the options on our Hunter.io alternative and Apollo alternative pages, and see how data and sending costs add up on our cold email software pricing overview.
